Submission Guidelines
Monkey Puzzle Press publishes emerging and midcareer authors. Nearly all of our authors have had works published in literary magazines or other publications: a resume including a list of prior publications can strengthen your submission. Although this is important, part of our mission is to present first novels and collections of poetry. Recent titles include Searching for Suzi by Nancy Stohlman, The Aftermath, etc. by Get in the car, Helen, Cold Instant by Jack Collom, expired Rx by Brandon Arthur, with upcoming titles including After the Orange Glow by Mark Spitzer and Tapeworm by Nicholas B. Morris.
What Monkey Puzzle Press Publishes
Monkey Puzzle Press publishes literary novels, full-length short story collections, poetry, essays, and chapbooks. Monkey Puzzle Press does not publish genre fiction such as mysteries, Gothic romances, Westerns, or science fiction.
Monkey Puzzle Press produces relatively few titles each year and our books reflect the individual tastes of its small staff. Monkey Puzzle Press looks for writing with a unique voice and perspective that instructs, inspires, and entertains the reader.
How to Submit a Manuscript / Chapbook
Along with a query letter, we prefer to see samples (20-30 pages) with brief outlines before reviewing entire manuscripts. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with every submission or we will be unable to respond. Monkey Puzzle Press does not accept electronic/disc submission. Our response time on samples is 4-6 weeks. The review process for full length manuscripts currently takes 4-6 months, possibly longer. Manuscripts that seem appropriate for Monkey Puzzle Press are given several careful readings and the final decision rests with Monkey Puzzle Press’ publisher, Nate Jordon. We empathize with your anticipation and appreciate your patience when submitting your manuscript. Phone calls or letters of inquiry will not hasten the process. If you would like to know if your manuscript was received, and how long it will approximately take for us to reach a decision, please include a self-addressed stamped postcard so we can reply upon receipt.

I need some advice for my blog….I like your layout. Can you help me? 1 2 1
Sirs,
I submitted a manuscript entitled “The Cat’s Meow” some months ago for you to review, and I’m just checking in on whether you’ve begun reading it. Sorry if I may sound a bit impatient, but I don’t even remember if you’ve sent me a response to it yet, rejecting or otherwise. I understand that you do have a very great deal of manuscripts to get around to reading, and so if you are yet to review “The Cat’s Meow,” just simply let me know, please. Thank you.
